PRINT INSPIRATIONS – SPRING/SUMMER 2015

PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’15 – “STRIPED MÉLANGE”

New York, London and Milan have, unanimously, voted for stripes as the print of the season. They were set widely on maxi dresses, on casually tailored outerwear, fitted midi-length dresses, asymmetric skirts and as trims, like pockets, on the rest of the silhouettes. While Resort ‘15 collections witnessed the trend of putting together horizontal stripes for the top and vertical stripes on the bottomwear, together, this season translated this idea on standalone separates. Designers like Altuzarra, Cushnie et Ochs, Kaelen, Tess Giberson, Nicole Miller and many more, offered collage-inspired silhouettes where different asymmetric panels, varying in the thickness and thinness of stripes were put together. Resembling patchwork, the final garments were mostly coloured in monochrome accents, leaving out a few exceptions who threw in metallic stripes. courtesy: fashionforwardtrends.com

PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’15 – “AS THIN AS IT GETS”

While colour blocked and checked suits have led the way in previous seasons, S/S ‘15 was all about another classic pattern- the pinstripe, especially at the more tailoring-focused shows. Appearing in bold, thick, thin, contrast forms, the pinstripe motif was the popular choice for most collections. Pinstripe appeared on oversized overcoats, classic two-button blazers, as well as, on contemporary suiting. Except for formal wear, loose fitting lowers, short stiff jackets, tank tops, cropped pants and one piece jumpsuits also sported the pattern. Pinstripes were cut and sewn in different directions, mixing the vertical with the horizontal on kneepads, collars and pockets at Christopher Kane, J.W. Anderson, Matthew Miller, Trussardi, whereas, Casely-Hayford gave it a futuristic appeal by using graphic effects and Comme des Garcons went for a modern look by mixing it with dark florals. The pinstriped pattern was seen breaking the restriction of being considered as conservative business attire to a rather fashionable option. courtesy: fashionforwardtrends.com

PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’15 – “MOD COLLAGE”

Artistic prints, in the form of a collage, were found in various textures and colours at Resort 2015. Designers incorporated patchwork prints and torn images to create the cut out effect. Clover Canyon and Fendi used slashed florals, colour blocking and floral layers, whereas, Erdem presented his prints in the form of scattered cut outs and unusual slashed floral layouts. Prabal Gurung used different collaged artwork, woven texture and paintwork; and Rachel Comey presented solid paint areas on her minimal designs. Along with these techniques, texture mixing and photographic areas can also be played with. The theme of mod collage refrained from colour pop shades and was represented by darker tones of grey, ink blue and brown with lighter shades like sky blue and mustard. courtesy: fashionforwardtrends.com

PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’15 – “UPHOLSTERY STRIPES”
Stripes are as inevitable to spring, as florals are. Designers can be very creative with stripes by the way they choose to position them and the way the garment is cut, stripes have the power to sculpt, slim and stretch the body. Resort 2015 embraced stripes in all their guises, on everything from skirts, shirts, pants, dresses, clutches and shoes. The ones that stood out the most were the stripes used on deck chairs, curtains, blinds and upholstery. Think bright and colourful stripes, oscillating between the thickness and thinness. These stripes always work well with florals, which can be seen in the collections of Chloe and Christian Dior. Christian Siriano opted for painted irregular stripes, Tia Cibani was all for engineered stripes, whereas, Just Cavalli’s style reflected bold regular stripes and Nicole Miller went for vertical and horizontal ones. Primary colour mixes like yellow and navy, effervescent green and navy, orange and red took center stage for the summer. courtesy: fashionforwardtrends.com

PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’15 – “70′S FLOWER POWER”
Whoever thought flowers weren’t ground-breaking for spring, was in for a rude awakening as designers went all out with the nature theme. Orla Kiely thought outside the box this season as decorators painted the set with flowers and models planted sunflowers during a charming presentation. Forget 2015, it was all about the flower power of the 1970s. If one needs to reminisce, House of Holland is a good example, as the clothes were covered in his psychedelic bold prints. For the demure, Simone Rocha‘s red poppies or Marchesa’s embroidered collection would be more apt and if one needs garden-inspiration, Matthew Williamson’s show would be a perfect fit. courtesy: fashionforwardtrends.com
