PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’14 – “MAD OVER PLAID”

Moving on from last season’s houndstooth mania, this season, plaid made a refreshing comeback. The checkered pattern is more than the customary horizontal and vertical bands, it could be shaped into Tartan, Gingham checks, Tattersall or Madras checks. Instead of the regular boyfriend shirts frequented by the trend, Spring Summer 2014 collections incorporated it in flowy, diaphanous and feminine silhouettes. Plaid was presented on sheer fabrics, lace overlays, merged with florals and satins to lend a softer vibe to the otherwise masculine style. Rodarte, Derek Lam, Zimmermann, Tadashi Shoji and Costello Tagliapietre, all fashioned this trend on the runway and brought into play fabrics varying from chiffon to wool. Two different types of plaid worked in the same ensemble flanked by bright colour pops, instead of the usual monochromes, could be an interesting version of the trend. Top Active Trend Themes, Women's, S/S 2015, DIGITAL SKIN, think different

Top Active Trend Themes, Women's, S/S 2015, DIGITAL SKIN prints & graphics

DIGITAL SKIN welcomes a new age of mankind, where technology is used to enhance nature-- improving, healing or even literally becoming one with the human body. 3D materials provide the body with protection and repair, while fabrics block UV rays, wick moisture and foster healthier skin. Compression inserts are incorporated to elevate core function, optimize or recover muscle use and improve the posture. Colors play between the natural and the man-made, with rubbery matte neutrals, glassy blue-greens and greys and high-shine finishes. Modern and sleek shapes are influenced by the sci-fi realm, centering around a body conscious fit, with streamlined details and out-of-this-world textures. Yes, it's high tech used like we've only ever imaged, but still everything remains rooted within nature; nothing feels overly synthetic or cold. At the heart of DIGITAL SKIN lies scientific innovation---a challenge to break boundaries, all to benefit the active body.

CANDYLAND welcomes a rush of contagious energy, injecting high voltage vibes into the activewear world as never seen before. While this feeling of carefree whimsy will surely continue for seasons to come, it is positively exploding into Spring 2015. The focus is on surfer girls from Bondi Beach to the Hawaiian Pipeline, mixed with the humor and dreaminess of the Harajuku street style movement, inspiring designs that put the fun into function. Materials range from foamy neoprenes and super slick spandex, to classic comfy favorites like heavy cotton fleece and reverse terry weaves. Silhouettes mostly stick to classic shapes, we do see an exaggeration in proportion (both oversized and shrunken), while the rash guard, sporty bustier and baggy sweatpants are favorite features. Basics are refreshed with new materials, chunky colorblocks and a healthy dose of humor. Playfully sweet and silly graphics will be the season's signature, while a palette of acid hues, both pop and pastel shades, are impossible to ignore.

Top Active Trend Themes, Men's, S/S 2015, WAVY, key words

Top Active Trend Themes, Men's, S/S 2015, WAVY prints & graphics

WAVY combines the tropical aesthetic of action sports with design specifications from activewear and the influence of current creative movements. In short, the style consists of colorful, minimalist clothing cut in modern ways and executed with high-quality materials like waxed cotton and boxed waffle cashmere. In graphics, consider placing natural prints and patterns on technical materials to formulate an organic surface - literally the fusion of natural and manufactured comes to life. The rising awareness and participation in aquatic sports as well as conservational efforts have spawned a repurposed eco system among a global community. With a record-breaking attendance record up 14% in the past year, 27,000 people attended this past September's Surf Expo - a clear gauge of where this niche industry is headed and its heavy forecasted influence on activewear. Water is the new gold and it's time to go blue.

Top Active Trend Themes, Men's, S/S 2015, SQUADRON, prints & graphics

SQUADRON is an individual, not an aesthetic. They are operatives with a heightened appreciation for functionality that can only be seen in adopted tactical textures, tailored silhouettes and mobile comforts - all while maintaining a utilitarian approach. At any given moment they can be activated, and their style is dynamic enough to be ready for anything. Their preference in color palettes is military-inspired, and their primary choice for graphic and prints is influenced by multiple ciphers such as virtual algorithms, dynamic simplicities, radar screens and Morse code. With the escalation of innovation within fabric technologies, such as sonic welding, repellents and Nike Flyknit, as well as in accessories like all-in-one information storage and protective coatings to minimize damage, this operative is seeking out the best of the best in all areas of his wardrobe and will not settle for less.
