PRINT INSPIRATION – S/S ’14 – “MAD OVER PLAID”

Moving on from last season’s houndstooth mania, this season, plaid made a refreshing comeback. The checkered pattern is more than the customary horizontal and vertical bands, it could be shaped into Tartan, Gingham checks, Tattersall or Madras checks. Instead of the regular boyfriend shirts frequented by the trend, Spring Summer 2014 collections incorporated it in flowy, diaphanous and feminine silhouettes. Plaid was presented on sheer fabrics, lace overlays, merged with florals and satins to lend a softer vibe to the otherwise masculine style. Rodarte, Derek Lam, Zimmermann, Tadashi Shoji and Costello Tagliapietre, all fashioned this trend on the runway and brought into play fabrics varying from chiffon to wool. Two different types of plaid worked in the same ensemble flanked by bright colour pops, instead of the usual monochromes, could be an interesting version of the trend.
